Foundation Intensive Extension with Matthias Schott

Methods to deepen performances, prepare emotionally, work on scenes and mini-monologues, self-tape/audition pieces and layered character development.

Useful resources to help beginners and intermediate actors develop creativity, clarity, boldness and confidence in their performances.

A well-rounded course that delves deep into the life of the character to be played through improvisation, past circumstances, character relationship exercises, object exercises and music.

Starting from a place of truth and accuracy, he leads the participants until they have connected with the text and the character. The workshop helps participants draw from their own lives and/or imagination, teaches them to make well-informed choices, define scenic goals for the character, and deal with any other challenges the material presents.

“In every character there is something unspoken, a hidden drama, a hidden dream, hidden feelings, a whole big life that has not found expression words. Now and then, suddenly, it bursts out – in this or that phrases, or scene.” – Nemerovich-Danchenko
“„A character is like a building. I´ve never studied architecture but I imagine first ou have to prepare plans, lay down the base, a solid base that has to do with character, and from there build up. Once this is clear, you can add the details: I want blue walls, I want wood floors, I want him to speak this way or move like that. But first you have to think.“ – Javier Bardem

The process of Creating A Character involves a continuous cycle of exploring and embodying the character while expanding one’s own playful possibilities. These exercises establish a connection between the character’s experiences and your own creative reservoir, imagination, and personal memories. The key to enjoying the game is by creating behavior that is both interesting and believable, as well as specific. After understanding what is needed for the character, it is important to be curious and non-judgemental towards all of this and, with the same attitude, to allow your own known and perhaps still unknown weaknesses, fears, insecurities, abysses and strengths to flow into the creation of the character.

“I’m a director and acting teacher and I want t say what a wonderful resource the Schott Acting Studio is for actors, directors and all people active in theatre, film and television. I have had the great pleasure and experience of working with Matthias Schott over the years, taking his own online-classes which are some of the best I’ve experienced – inspiring and offering great knowledge of craft – and also benefiting from our in-depth conversations and the work with the many international teachers that he has invited to give classes in his studio. This has opened new doors for me and helped me to discover and learn about different techniques and approaches to work from around the world. In all respects, I think the Schott Acting Studio is unique.” – Mike Alfreds (Theatre Director UK, Author of “Different Every Night”, “Then What Happens?”, “What Actors Do”)
“Matthias is a phenomenal acting coach. I always come back to his teachings, whether it be preparing for theatre or film. Matthias has an engaging, attentive and intuitive teaching style that nurtures each student’s journey. He identifies potential blocks and offers the tools to work through them in order to understand where you need to go to reach a level of higher awareness and understanding as an actor. He breaks down the multifaceted process through a vast variety of exercises which makes the task at hand tangible and approachable, no matter where you are in your acting journey. Matthias’ workshops make up both individual and group exercises that shape and form each student and attune to each individual level. Matthias has guided me from a fundamental level to individual scene- and character work or auditions for schools and jobs. There is a wisdom and deep sense of humanity in the way he approaches each character or scene, teaching us to challenge our understanding of the human experience, be conscious and present in our acting choices, never judge our experience or understanding of the character, but be curious, free and creative.”Nina Mariko Sandquist (Gangs of Oslo – Blodsbrødre)
“It’s just always a pleasure to work with Matthias! The way he creates a safe, yet challenging atmosphere really gives you the chance to explore your acting and get out of your comfort zone. I highly appreciate his subtle feedback and his calm nature. Thanks a lot for everything, Matthias – we’ll surely see each other again soon!” – Nico Weging (Foundation Intensive & Scene Study)
“Matthias Schott is an outstanding acting coach and workshop leader. Through the detailed exercises in the workshops and his incredible curated eye, he provides generous individual feedback which has been pivotal on my acting journey. He is a true talent and the classes are not only a melting pot of ideas and experimentation but also fun! I can truly say that without it, my acting journey would not have grown as much. “I recently took part in Acting Foundation II Course with Matthias, and can’t recommend it enough. We had such an amazing, productive and fun week full of scene work, character development, improvisation, acting exercises and deep inner work. Working on different scenes with Matthias was always such an interesting combination of fun and hard work. His guidance, feedback and questioning helped us to look for some other interesting sides of character’s feelings, attitude and behaviour. He is always supportive, encouraging and motivating to try new, fresh ideas in order to make the performance more complex, easy or emotional. This was not my first workshop and definitely not the last one at Schott Acting Studio! Definitely recommend to take Acting Foundation Courses with Matthias and other workshops with international teachers!” – A.Akopian (September Foundation II – Extension 2024)

It was a wonderful experience to have this workshop with Matthias. I found an opportunity to act in a safe and accepting space. I improved my skills and had a lot of fun. We did a lot of useful exercises, which help to find a contact between acting partners, improve our imagination and physicality, find out a creativity and joy. Matthias also shared an information about a career strategy, which is very useful and helpful! Definitely reccommend 🙂” – Sofiia Natalchuk (Foundation Intensive – September 2024)
I took Matthias workshop as a beginner. It was one of my first acting experiences. Although I had a hard time opening up in the beginning, his sensitive individual care helped me overcome my fears and blockages. By the end of the week, not only did I perform like I had never imagined I could but also learned a lot about myself and my abilities and strengths. I would recommend Matthias‘ workshops to anyone who wants to improve their acting by taking a deep look into their soul and grow out of self-reflection. I will definitely continue to take part in Matthias‘ courses. He is a very inspiring and wonderful human being.” – Rebecca Veil
