Fusing the Susan Batson & Stella Adler Methods with Matthias Schott

The Embodied Instrument: An Intensive in Advanced Acting Techniques

Move beyond technique. Become a conduit where your deepest humanity fuels the character’s truth.

  • Transform Personal Experience: Channel your own longings, fears, and sensory memories into a character’s focused and purposeful energy.
  • Master Emotional Craft: Learn to access, shape, and reproduce specific emotional states required by a scene with precision and technical control.
  • Embody the World of the circumstances: Use Stella Adler’s principles to physically realize the given circumstances, making the fictional environment tangible and immediate.
  • Pursue Compelling Objectives: Shift from simply speaking lines to actively pursuing goals, moment by moment, propelling the scene forward from a place of genuine necessity.
  • Follow Instinct with Confidence: Develop the assurance to act on your most resonant impulses, making bold, specific choices that dynamically connect you to the scene.

This is not a beginner’s class. This is a high-octane laboratory for the committed actor (intermediate/advanced) ready to forge their personal life force into undeniable craft. We combine two strong acting techniques: Susan Batson’s focus on personal truth and Stella Adler’s emphasis on creating a believable world. This singular blending establishes a complete connection, linking your core emotional truth with the character’s specific physical and imaginative existence.

You are ready for this if you have a foundation in script analysis and character work, seek deeper emotional access, feel ready to transform your personal history into professional power, and want to stop “playing the lines” or “drown in the feeling” and start playing the actions.

We use a combination of technical approaches and creative imagination to find solutions for the problems that can arise when using your personal experiences:

  • overly fixated on emotions, gauging achievement by the intensity of your feelings.
  • to focus too inwardly on oneself
  • Neglecting to ground the personal truth within the fictional setting.
  • Getting trapped in the desire to hold onto a feeling, rather than taking action.
  • Removing the character’s inhibitions and limitations

Structure & Journey:

PART 1: The Foundation (The Inner Landscape): We begin with Event, Personalization, Sensations, and Physical Condition—building the character’s reality from the inside out, using your own instrument.

PART 2: The Architecture (The Outer Journey): We apply Beats, Actions, and Super-Objective—structuring your discovered truth into a dynamic, playable score for performance.

Having trained with some of the best Strasberg teachers/coaches for several years, apart from my conventional drama school education, I believe actors should be in charge of their own process. I hold a fundamental respect for the individual actor’s instrument. My role is not to impose a single technique, but to help you discover and refine what makes your own work alive. I will never mandate the use of personal affective memory. For some, it’s a powerful key to unlocking profound emotional access and confidence. For others, it becomes a barrier, and they find greater freedom in imagination. The essential principle is this: whether drawn from life or imagination, the actor’s fuel must ultimately be launched into the world of the story. Personal experience is not the destination, but a springboardboard into the character’s reality.” Matthias Schott

“In acting everything comes out of what you are or some aspect of who you are. Everything is part of your experience. We all have a spectrum of emotions in us. It´s a broad one, and it´s the actor´s job to reach into this assortment of emotions and experience the ones that are appropriate for his character and the story.” – Marlon Brando
“This is a very important job, I understood how important the material was within myself; all my fears, judgment of myself of how imperfect I am. I understood that could all be used. It was all art. I wanted to commit myself to it. To teach the inspiration – that we are responsible to creating walking talking human beings.”Susan Batson (“TRUTH”)
“The Susan Batson Technique workshop was very enlightening. The two day class brings forward new methods of approaching a text that are definitely great to have in your toolbelt! Matthias Schott does a wonderful job teaching what can be a rigorous and complex technique in a clear and simple way. The workshop allows you to expand your repertoire of techniques or to simply enjoy yourself if you are a beginner. The exercises he assigned us really allowed me to free up, the prep made me connect to the work in a profound way and reach a new emotional peak. There was one monologue exercise in particular in which we used sensory memory that left me completely stunned at how effective the technique is and opened up a level of truth within myself I had not before been able to attain. It was a very entertaining and inspiring weekend!”Gabrielle (Susan Batson Technique Workshop)
